More research is being done on this very important issue
and this site will be updated as new information becomes
available.
Information about Ontario Mental Health is difficult to get, but
the following data has just become available to us...
The Ontario Government currently has under the Ministry of Health
14 Psychiatric Hospitals with a total number of beds of:3095
60 Regular Hospital Facilities with psychiatric beds of:1607
.......................Total number of psychiatric beds:4702
The Province consists of approximately:....19,510,700citizens
Those figures give us a very scarey picture of the number of
citizens who can benefit from our mental health facilities
compared to our total population and
those figures are inaccurate due to the
large number of Ontario citizens who elect not to use the services
provided by The Ministry of Health. Further, the past history
of Provincial Governments has placed a large number of patients out
in the community where they must come to the hospitals as out-patients.
The above figures are changing from week to week as Premier Harris
and Restructuring Committees province-wide are scratching the number of
beds off their daily count sheets. The local hospitals are governed by
their Hospital Administrators who only have so many dollars to work
within their budgets.
Once the present Conservative Government closes down The Brockville
Psychiatric Hospital and replaces it with this new Correctional
Treatment Centre, these above figures again will change drastically
as the overall bedcount will have dropped even further.
One has to wonder where all these reductions to services to the
public will lead.
March 24/99....The Harris Government announces millions of dollars
to be pumped into Mental Health.....It seems that Premier Harris
has succumbed to public pressure......NO - Guess AGAIN...
The Harris Government is about to call an election
ONTARIO - Prepare yourself for a few freebies and handouts - Our
hard-lined Conservative Government is gonna try to buy your vote
What is really surprising is the public apathy about these
conditions! Should we not, as a society, be more concerned about our
fellow man? Fortunately for the great percentage of us, mental health
does not enter into our everyday life. It's "...I'm okay Jack!"
instead of "...can I help you Jack?"
The Brant-Haldimand-Norfolk Citizen's Action Committee has an
agenda
We wont try to pull the wool over your eyes with a false
showing of human compassion for our fellow man. We care about others
and we care about our community. Some of us care for different
reasons.
Our Agenda is simple - We Want a Regional Correctional Centre
for our community.
Correctional Officers and Support Staff want
it so they can continue working in their field of endeavour in their own
community. Local Merchants want it so they may continue to prosper in
their own vocation. The General Public wants it so they can
continue to live in this community and flourish along with it.
It's really that simple Premier Harris !
