As of this update our counter quickly approaches 6000 hits and we
are very gratified with the interest we have received to date, however
a lot more has to be done. While most of the interest comes from across
Ontario, we are being visited from The United States and Europe.
WE THANK THOSE VISITORS WHO HAVE COME AND LEFT US A MESSAGE OF

On Wednesday Oct 12th your webmaster along with Jim Fraser and Doug
Taylor attended an information meeting sponsored by the COAO
(Correctional Officers Association of Ontario). The meeting was geared for the
staff of Burtch and the Brantford Jail and the three representatives
presented their case in a professional and open manner.
The goal of the COAO is to decertify Opseu as our bargaining agent
with the government and assume this responsibility ourselves.
For those of you who have not been around Ontario Corrections as long
as 1979, you may not be aware that Corrections went out on strike over
something referred to as Category 9. This was in regard correctional
officers and support staff not being properly represented as they had been
thrown into a category with other non-related groups of Opseu staff.
The strike was short-lived lasting only three days and the result was
the formation of Category 9 - our own unique category!
With the change of government and what some have described as the
failure of Opseu to properly represent corrections members, Category 9
was subsequently removed placing correctional officers and its support
staff in the same category as office workers in downtown Toronto
office buildings.
This has been a thorn in our side for some time now and the recent
strike vote as well as other "happenings" during convention have hampered
the will of corrections staff in that a greater number of office staff
in Toronto has outnumbered the vote of corrections staff.
For some time now, there has been talk of decertifying Opseu and getting on
with business without the constraints they have put on us in concert with
the government of the day.
COAO just may be that vehicle.
This website, in fairness to the different positions of COAO and
Autonomous Corrections, will continue to show both sides of the arguement
and the link below will remain on our site.
The decision to support one or the other is yours and we suggest you do
just that.
As of this date, Save our Jails is now supporting the COAO camp in what
they have to offer. Jim, Doug and I have some literature we took from this
meeting and we urge you to aquaint yourself with it.
As you know, this website is dedicated to the preservation of our
present Correctional System. We wish that the responsibility for those
people incarcerated by our court system remain within the jurisdiction
of our government, and indeed, within the Ministry of Corrections.
A little while ago, The Conservative Government under Mike Harris
announced that our system would not be privatized as was previously
planned.
We had hoped this was not done as a pre-election ploy
The provincial election was held June 3rd and it has been
discovered that the Conservative Government under Mike Harris
fully intends to privatize corrections. Yes, the previous
announcement was a pre-election ploy to downplay corrections
as an election issue and, in fact, to avoid a public service
strike.
